"The mindset that 'money doesn’t matter' is the exact definition of privilege."

Linking straight to Victoria, because this blog post just dead on: http://www.victoriakirst.com/?p=1261

I then proceeded to spend another 30 minutes writing more on top of this, and then realized that I wasn't really adding anything of content, so we'll just leave it at this. ^^:

Though I guess in the grand scheme of things that's probably for the best, it was charged enough that it could feasibly cause problems.

Basically, the subject really captures the intent of the post. This was scoped towards talking about starting CS salaries when visiting schools and telling kids about computer science. People were like "OH NO DON'T MENTION SALARIES", but... that's so effin' stupid. The reason I'm IN computer science is because the money is WAY better than teaching. If they were competitive I'd be teaching in a heartbeat. People were going "But money's not important/that's not why you should pick a career" which is, frankly, is stupid. The primary reason we work is for money. Saying it's not important is about one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

And then it just kind of hit us that the problem we have with people saying that is that they are in such a comfortable position that they can SAY that money doesn't matter that they've totally lost perspective. So, yeah. :S

...Also, that people need to find ways to make $$ doing what they love. If people want to teach they don't HAVE to be a teacher, or they might find something they can teach that makes them money.

PS- inserting my dad's favorite phrase here :)

(That being said, I think it is great that people want to do jobs for the love of them instead of the money, as long as that money is enough to get by. But they do need to realize it is a tradeoff.)
