Fox family

The vixen fox emerged from under the schoolhouse yesterday at about 11:00 A.M.  I jumped to the telescope and turned on the camera.  Shortly after her appearance, three fox kits tumbled out of the den!  That's all I could count, as she was keeping them herded pretty close to the entrance.  Whenever a young one tried to follow her from the den, she ( Read more... )

I've been waiting for an opportunity like this for 34 years!

Boy, those babies sure do blend in with their environment. I wondered how you were getting such great shots - what a cool idea to use a telescope! I love these pictures and stories. Thanks so much for sharing.

Yes, they do! I could only make out three of them, but there might have been more (three would be a pretty small litter).

I should have written this post more clearly. I used the telescope as a spotting scope, then I just use the zoom on the camera to take these pictures.

Oh, I see! Do you take the photos from inside the house? I'd imagine everybody would scurry back under the building if you made an appearance...

Yes, exactly. I can't so much as touch the doorknob without the foxes darting back under the building. I'm trying to figure out a way around this. I could sit under a spruce tree nearby, reading a book, waiting with my camera...

I want to see a fox kit! You and Emilia are so lucky. They look so cute. If we had burned that schoolhouse down like I wanted to, we wouldn't have a fox family living with us.

That's true. Who knows what else might be living in there?!

I don't know how I will keep Cinnamon from pestering these foxes though. The kits will need to spend progressively more time outside as they grow, and he will be chasing them like he chased those raccoons this morning.

The only solution is to bring Cin inside for the summertime.

Once his vaccinations are up to date, and he is sufficiently groomed, I do plan to let him inside more often. He can sleep with Emilia.
