Resolution on Resolution

I opened up yet another tab on my browser for a potential laptop.

“Shitty-res again", I murmured.  Shitty-res was  my term for low resolution screens on modern laptops.  I find it  ridiculous that new laptops are still being sold with screen resolutions  that are no better than that which I had in my first laptop more than  20 years ago.  I refuse ( Read more... )

I am also in search of a new laptop, and it is taking forever. Hope you find something that works for you soon.

This, I feel, is the least common of the definitions of resolution people might write about. Sometimes it can be infuriating though - especially when I am playing the mystery object kind of games and I'm like...Is that the ship in a bottle? I think it is!!

Forgive my layperson's approach here, but can you custom a high res large screen computer? I know that people "build" computers, or refurbish a shell to new specs. If it's the graphics card that's causing the weight, can't you just take it out?

Or am I asking a graffiti artist to paint the sistene chapel here?

You can build custom desktop computers; that's what I do most of the time. Unfortunately, laptops tend to be tightly integrated, just like phones, and so the parts are generally not customizable much. Memory and storage can be expanded on some laptops, and some manufacturers offer limited configurability at purchase time. Graphics cards in laptops usually can't be removed either, although some high-end gaming notebooks offer upgradeable graphics, and the weight comes from the coolers and the much larger battery that they require, which definitely can't be removed.

What a great use of the prompt! It was also informative. It is so common to make new computers actually worse than the predecessor in some key way - same screen, worse keyboard.

I feel your pain in find a new laptop that's suitable, which is why I usually hold onto them until there's no other option.

Yeah, me too. Hence holding on to my work laptop for 7 years despite my company offering to replace it anytime after 3 years.
