WARNINGS: HEAVY SPOILERS for Supernatural Season 10, Episode 21 "Dark Dynasty"

Over the past ten seasons of Supernatural, I've fallen in love with many characters. Many of those characters have died. I grieved, I moved on, I found new favorites. Right now, my favorites are as follows (in no particular order): Castiel, Crowley, Kevin, and Charlie (that they all start with C's and/or with a K sound is purely coincidence). We met Cas in season 4, Crowley in season 5, and Kevin and Charlie in season 7. Cas has died about three times since his introduction, but never permanently. Crowley has been alternately ally and enemy to the Winchesters whenever it benefits him, but has never died. Kevin, unfortunately, was killed in last season (season 9), and, today, we lost Charlie.

Since the beginning of the show, we've gained and lost basically every recurring character. Out of the many, many characters we've gotten to know, we have probably less than ten that are still living (including the ones that have essentially left the show, because we've seen over the past couple seasons that, if a character hasn't died explicitly, they can still be brought back just to kill them off and tie off the loose end), including Jody (s4) and Garth (s7).

Killing characters is fine. Killing every character is not fine. Killing characters because the Winchesters are being FUCKING IDIOTS is LESS THAN NOT FINE.

I can excuse the Winchesters in season 1, 2, even up to 5 were fine because they were still learning. Season 6 and 7, okay. But 8? Dean's upset Sam didn't look for him while he was in Purgatory, even though Sam said he wouldn't. Dean told him that, yeah, they say that, but they never actually go through with it, because that's just not what they do. We're starting to acknowledge that the brothers aren't smart when it comes to each other.

During season 8, Sam was willing to do whatever it took to close the Gates of Hell, even at the risk of his own life. Dean didn't agree and ended up saying "fuck it" and saving Sam. After that, Sam wasn't in a good place, and then season 9 happened. In order to save Sam's life, Dean let an angel who was a stranger to them possess Sam without his consent and continued to lie about it all season until the worst happened: it backfired, because of course it did. Using Sam as a vessel, the angel Gadreel killed Kevin, someone the Winchesters considered family and someone they'd dragged into their problems and were already responsible for royally fucking up his life. That was on the Winchesters.

Ever since the beginning, the Winchesters have kept things from each other for the other's "own good." Whether it be demon blood shenanigans or angelic possession, there's always some monumentally stupid and life-endangering secret being kept by one or both of them. This has NEVER ended well. Kevin was a casualty of this secret-keeping.

And now Charlie has joined the casualty list. Charlie Bradbury, a logical and pragmatic nerd who's a whiz with a computer and has never found a system she couldn't hack. Charlie, who's such a bright light and has so much energy and life, has lost her life protecting the Winchesters, who she has accepted into her family and has been accepted into theirs in return. Why? Because one of the Winchesters decided to do something behind the other one's back. That's on the Winchesters.

Dean sold his soul to save Sam at the end of season 2 that resulted in Dean going to hell and bringing the angels to Earth in a big way that led to Lucifer being freed, Dean let an angel possess Sam to heal his soul that led to Metatron gaining power and the death of Kevin, Sam orchestrated a fractious study group to analyze an evil tome that dangerous people were looking for that has so far resulted in the death of Charlie. Doing whatever it took to save each other has never ended well, and THEY'VE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS BUT HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING SUBSTANTIAL ABOUT IT.

AND I'VE HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH THEIR SELF-SACRIFICING AND DEPENDENT BULLSHIT.

They're willing to do literally whatever it takes to keep the other one alive, and if they die, they're willing to do literally whatever it takes to bring them back. Every single time, this has backfired on them and people they care about die. It's time for them to say, hey, next time I'm in a dangerous situation, just let me die. Next time I'm dying, let me die. Next time I'm dead, let me stay dead. Saving people, hunting things, that's all well and good, but maybe it's time you two separated because this relationship is dangerous and toxic, to both of them as well as every single person they interact with.

The show has acknowledged, IN THE SHOW, that their relationship isn't healthy. Maybe it's time they finally do something substantial about it. Maybe it's time for this relationship to be fixed.

I'm literally watching this show for Castiel now, and to an extent Crowley (and now Rowena), because I am 1000% done with the fucking Winchesters. Done.
