People can focus on the weirdest things in movies, can't they? I think it says a lot more about them personally than it does the filmmakers.
My biggest problems with Curious George were:
-The Man in the Yellow Hat was usually poorly animated and fairly annoying
-Are we supposed to be OK with "Ted" first telling George to run away and get lost in the Big City (as if he's not his responsibility!) and THEN allowing Animal Control to drag him away, crying and pleading, to who knows where???(pretty lucky that they send him in a boat to Africa instead of to the pound or something - but Ted doesn't really care!) What kind of a monster IS this guy?
Having said that, I thought George himself was well-designed, well-animated, and did a lot of cute business, and that the film overall had great art direction and a very warm, soft, charming feel.

I didn't get to see the movie, but even from the books i kind of disliked the Man in the yellow hat. I think he even gave George alcohol. And his name is Ted in the movie? Well, the director has his own, poetic lisence, i think that's what they call it. That's good that George was done well, also that they chose the one and only Frank Welker to do his voice. I have known no one else to do such good monkey sounds.

The book was definitely a product of its time when colonialism and bringing exotic anmials back to the states were seen as no big deal - at least the movie wisely changed it to have George following the unwitting (or witless) "Ted" (yes) back home. But it was still fun to see George get in trouble in the books, and at least TMITYH didn't have much to do with or say in the stories - much better that way, I think!

Imagine the ratings the movie would have gotten of George hadn't followed "Ted"...yeesh. I agree with you on the stories!
