I just remember the suit someone patented in the 1800's or so that was basically made of louvers that would open to allow air circulation. Heh.

My idea was simpler, but still not very lasting ... "Umbrella backpacks" that shield you from the sun and mist water down from all sides. Good until the water runs out, and heavy until the water runs out.

Hee. +1 bonus for voyeurism? *snerk*

Umbrella's not a bad idea. I've vaguely pondered that sort of thing, but I don't really have any idea how to mount it comfortably. Would complement an active cooling system well, at any rate.

I wonder how to estimate the water consumption rate of a sprayer. Probably higher than a closed-circuit evaporative cooler, I bet, because it doesn't keep the cold in. Not sure... Closed-circuit evaporative might be pretty efficient on dry days, because the latent heat of vaporization is so high. Alternatively, maybe you just want a trickle irrigation necklace? c.c

The backpack is the umbrella mount, as well as the water reservoir. I have seen handheld misters that work decently, but are not rally a "mister" in the true sense. Misters actually cool the air by evaporation, not spray onto someone. Though, small fans mounted under the umbrella could be used to create a downwards flow of air, complimented by misting from the corners of the umbrella frame ( ... )
