I rode alone tonight, as Tam was too busy to ride with me. I wanted to ride down to the river and check out the canal path, so I headed that way. It's mostly downhill from our house to the river, but there were enough uphill sections that I was pretty tired when I got just most of the way to the river. A bike computer might be a boon so you can see how far you've gone while you're out on the bike. It also helped me to understand the benefits of actually using different gears (by working to maintain a more consistent speed) instead of just slogging it out in the highest gear the entire ride. The one I have is cheap as heck (since I was trying to use up a gift card that I'd inexplicably won as a prize in a road rally I tried to keep the cost down to avoid paying Real Money), but it does a helpful scan through all of the basic stats (time, distance, avg speed).
