Just because Congress killed SOPA&PIPA doesn't mean it's over.

Congress dropped SOPA and PIPA so they won't be voted on, but they will probably be reintroduced as new bills with little tweaks sometime in the near future. I am definitely pro-industries being profitable, but I am not pro-effectively shutting down the internet to do it ( Read more... )

I don't go to the theatre or buy movies/music anyway (nor do I download them illegally). I just don't watch movies much (other than Netflix) and I listen to music I don't have on YouTube, so I really don't affect this protest anyway.

EDIT: I'm rethinking this. You're right./

I don't think this is going to have the desired effect, because a month isn't long enough for the people at the top to feel it. If you really want to effect a change, really want to make a statement, stop patronizing Sony and Viacom and Disney. (See here for associated holdings: http://www.cjr.org/resources/)

The people who are going to feel this are the people at the bottom. Show them that their business model is wrong in the long term. If they know it will end, they will wait you out.

Thanks for that link. I didn't know a resource like that was available. Why do you say those specific companies and not others who were sponsors/supporters of SOPA/PIPA?

I don't want to hurt the people at the bottom; my thought was that 1 month wasn't long enough to result in any layoffs or anything, but you're right that they will just wait it out anyway.

I honestly named those three because they're the ones I'm familiar with and was feeling too lazy to google SOPA/PIPA supporters.

For them to change, we have to change, and that has to be a long-term process. Unfortunately a lot of people won't do that, because it's hard and they don't care that much. -- This is not about you, I believe that you will and can. I think general internet people will not.
