What I'm Reading

I'm in the middle of The Rubber Band, a Nero Wolfe mystery by Rex Stout - it's good! Fun murder mystery, even more fun if you like the detectives. (Archie is such a charm to read. Reminds me of reading PG Wodehouse's novels just to see Bertie Wooster narrate ( Read more... )

*grins* I just finished Salvation's Reach myself (the last book), and coming as someone who did not expect to like the Imperial Guard (I usually find them boring), Abnett has done it again (I don't know why I was surprised).

The trick is that the "Ghostmaker" novel was actually written first, and it was a series of short stories rather strung together. I actually found it a little hard to follow compared to Tanith First-And-Only, and then Necropolis, which was actually the first true 'novel' written for the series.

You've got a *lot* more books to go if you want to see the whole story, and Salvation's Reach ended in such a way that I think there's more coming. I hope you continue to enjoy the books.

I picked up the omnibus out of, eh, let's say morbid curiosity and wasn't expecting to come out of it going 'I love this, I want more' - I've got zero experience with the Warhammer 40k verse, see. But it's fascinated me enough to go learn more about this 'verse, and I'm tempted to grab Eisenhorn after I pick up more Ghost novels.

I actually enjoyed Ghostmaker, once I figured out what the structure was - the only downside to it is that I've started caring about people like Larkin and so on, and I have to remind myself frequently and it's a crapshoot if anyone will get out of the series alive.

If I may go off on a tangent for a brief mo: I think these books are good for helping me adopt the 'you are on a ride, sit back and let it happen' mentality, which helps prevent me from trying to write the plot in advance and getting annoyed at twists or otherwise getting annoyed at stories for no good reason. It's good mental practice and on top of that I get fun action-y stories out of the bargain.

Have you tried the Nero Wolfe series from the early 2000's with Maury Chaykin as Wolfe and Tim Hutton as Archie? Well done, with a sort of repertory group of returning actors in different parts.
