Looking for something to read

Folks, do any of you know of any good scary novels? Or short story collections. I'm not looking for a link to a website with scary things, I'm looking for a book I can take with me to bed and read under the covers ( Read more... )

Have you checked out the Haunted America series? I know of at least three: Haunted America, Historic Haunted America and Haunted Heartland. Each has a bunch of short-ish and often quite spooky accounts of allegedly haunted places across the country. They're more like reportage than straight narrative, though. (I don't believe ghosts are real, but the tone is more journalistic than what you'd find in a novel.)

Also, I don't know if you're much into sci-fi, but some of Stanislaw Lem's books are downright chilling to me. I think I mentioned before how much I like Solaris for how terrifying it is.

I don't like Koontz. I like Stephen King a lot, but neither of these recs are anything like his stuff.

I've got my library listings open in another tab and have placed Haunted America in a hold - I'm afraid my library doesn't have much in the way of Stanislaw Lem, but I did snag Eden and Imaginary Magnitude - fingers crossed they're good!

And I thank you for that - I'm looking for horror I have no experience with that's scary, so thanks!

He's a little dense sometimes because he's hard sci-fi but you can usually skip the digressions about physics without losing much. And I'm not sure but I think a lot of Lem's less successful works are probably out of print now. Which, hey, the translations are allegedly not the best, but until new ones are made it sucks not to have access to them.

I actually don't think we have either of the two you mentioned so let me know if you like them.
