Reading Meme

The holidays seem like a good time to dust off (or in my case, sadly, renew) the old library card, and I'm always interested to try something new so...

I think I'll start a book recommendation meme. )

Hells yes, I'll play along! I love reading and I am always up for recommendations.

Suggest to me some fantasy! I am a huge fan of the entire broad range...contemporary/modern, medieval, 'monster' themed (vampires/dragons/weres/etc), "high" fantasy...you name it, I shall have to give it a shot :D

I don't read a lot of mystery either, so if you'd like to recommend a good mystery/crime book to me, that'd be nice too. (Hope you don't mind doing two suggestions. I am a glutton for books lol).

And now I shall run off to repost X3

Fantasy: "Dragon Wing" by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
It's actually the first in a seven book series called "The Death Gate Cycle." I love the entire series, but may as well start at the beginning, right?

Mystery: "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie
It starts out a little slow, but I love the premise, and there's quite a twist at the end.(Although, the same twist has been used a lot since, so you might figure it out! XD)

Neat! I've read some other stuff by Weis & Hickman, but I don't think I've ever heard of this series before, so I will be quite happy to give it a shot. :D

Uhoh...perhaps I should have mentioned that Agatha Christie is like the one mystery author I've read extensively? I've actually read And Then There Were None before (although I agree with you, it's a fantastic recommendation). Incidentally if you like this book you might also like the Umineko no Naku Koro Ni manga/anime/visual novel series, which is heavily based off of And Then There Were None.

Any other mystery suggestions?

Hmm... I shall pull one out of left field then! How about:

"The Big Over Easy" by Jasper Fforde
This is really more comedic and bizarre, like all things by Jasper Fforde, who is now one of my favorite authors of all time, but it is technically a mystery.

WHEW! It was a bit of an endeavor, but I finally finished the entire Death Gate Cycle series based on your recommendation.

I was actually really happy with it overall! There was some great character development on the part of Haplo and Alfred in particular, and I did not predict the overall resolution they ended up going with, which was a plus for me.

Thanks for the rec :)

I'm very glad you enjoyed it!

It's one of my favorite fantasy series, and I probably reread at least part of it every couple of years or so.

I like how each of the first four books could really stand completely on their own and then after that everything slowly starts to tie in together.

Some year, if I'm feeling super ambitious, and can find really good quality stay in place make-up, or perhaps henna, I will be a Patryn for Halloween, and absolutely no one will know who I am! XD

That would be an absolutely badass costume :D Patryns are so cool! And I loved the idea of tattoo-magic as soon as it was introduced XD

And your right, it was really nice how everything tied up together neatly at the end. I didn't feel like I was left hanging in any particular way because a world was forgotten by the end, it was great.

(Also, having read the other Dragonlance stuff in the past, I got a huge laugh out of Zifnab/Fizban wandering around lol..oooh Paladine, we love you).
