Even as you wait for death | you're wiser than I am

[ooc: For the sake of pronouns, Link is severs_twilight and Link is hero_of_smash]

The Door of Time stood sundered, ripped off its hinges by Din's Fire. The Master Sword gleamed in its pedestal. The hands of the Hero's descendant were wrapped around the blade, knuckles white.

"Again! We have to try it again.." The Hero of Light and Shadow's voice cut through the air of the room, the harsh tone echoing the look in his eyes.

Link gritted his teeth and pulled Zelda closer. His left hand covered her right on the Ocarina; his right hand rested atop Link's on the Master Sword. The Sage of Time raised the instrument to her lips once more, and the soft notes of the Song of Time seemed to swell and fill the air. The power of two Triforces glowed about the Ocarina, fueling the song.

But nothing happened.

"You said it would work." Link's voice shook with anger and frustration and -- though he wouldn't admit it -- fear for the people he couldn't return to.

"I said we could try."

"You said... " Link's voice trailed off as he shook off the other Hero's grip and stormed down the steps leading to the pedestal. Link turned to follow, but was stopped by the anger in the other man's voice -- an anger he was used to giving, not receiving. "Just...just leave me alone!"

[Anger was never clean. Nothing about it was anything; anything but underlying fear raging to the surface.

The faces of the people he cared about, that he'd seen so clearly - that he did see so clearly - had flickered back in the Temple with Link and Zelda. For a minute everything had turned a darker black than he'd wanted to believe was even possible; that he hadn't believed was even possible.

Being stuck in this Hyrule forever... it wasn't an option. People back in Ordon, in Castle Town--]

[Link banged out of the double doors of the Temple of Time, his jaw and body posture set with anger. He drew a harsh breath, and tried to push away the tightness in his chest. His throat hurt and stung, and his face burned. Anger, rage, sorrow; everything was confused. He'd left the temple without even thanking Zelda for her effort, but that was all behind him now. Gratitude felt so far away- felt impossible.

He'd put so much hope into this one attempt, so much promise..]

[Rusl, Ilia, Colin, everyone.. nobody can do it. Nobody... not even two of the Heroes and a Princess...

It's hopeless.]

[He stared blankly ahead of himself as that thought washed over him; gripped him tightly. It crushed his shoulders and weighted him to the spot for a moment. He felt his eyes sting, but closed them tightly and swallowed the feeling.]

It's hopeless! [He shouted, at the back alley wall he found himself before. A nearby dog whimpered and tucked back into a small grotto. Link put a hand over his eyes and turned down another alleyway. A sign nicked his shoulder as he passed, and he snapped to face it, face tight with rage. Gritting his teeth he gave the hanging sign a quick, harsh shove, making it bang back against the wall it hung before. A small piece chipped off, but Link had already continued off down another passage. He wasn't looking where he was going, he wasn't looking at anything.]
