I find the 'pedophile husbands' part funny (in that sad sort-of way) when we get to Betrayed and Chosen. But seriously, if there is someone Zoey doesn't like, she will insult them, even if they probably didn't do anything to her. Why are we supposed to find this admirable or, at the very least, think she isn't being a little shit?
“Then an amazing thought hit me and I came to a complete stop. My parents no longer controlled what I did. I wasn't going to live with them ever again. John couldn't tell me what to do anymore.” Which is why you have an expensive car, get to go to parties, date, and own thongs. Because they controlled you. Wait.
I hate the next chapter. So much mythology!fail it becomes incomprehensible. Oh, by the way, I reviewed this book on my Livejournal in case anyone was interested.
On the subject of the "Waah! My Step-loser thinks the lawnmower is more important than my cute vintage bug!" thing, I'd have to side with John on that. I don't think lawnmowers do as well in rain or other bad weather as cars do. So yeah, Zoey? Shut up.
And oh my God, what is with the Casts (or at least PC) and belittling everyone? Don't they know that when you do nothing but insult other people, no matter how much others may not like them, the only one who comes off looking worse is you?
It seems to be a stuthor in general thing. The Hunger Games fic I'm currently trying to spork has the Stu basically going through the original story, but he's just so contemptuous of Haymitch and Effie that it comes across more as the Stu Being a complete asshole than them being bad. (The fact that he keeps ignoring Effie's actual bad moments to focus on mundane ones makes it all the more frustrating)
In terms of why people do this? I think it's a very simple and straightforwards technique they are attempting to use. "My character is awesome. I will show how awesome they are by having them tell about how everyone else sucks, and how they are not like that. Which further shows how awesome they are by figuring out how much people suck. And since my character is awesome, their judgement on other people are always right." Most of it is centered around the belief that the character is awesome and always right.Which probably is why suethors get away with it; fans buy into the logic.
