Also, for some reason ants don't like pine-based cleaners. I found that wiping pinesol around the edge of the dishwasher discourages them from going in. Make sure to get the vents on the front too!
Trust me, it could be worse. Though it doesn't sound pleasant.
Can you see where they are coming from? If so, I'd get some food-grade diatomaceous earth (aka fossil shell flour) and a hair-color application squeezy-bottle and poof the powder along all the cracks of the windows and doors and any other likely crevice where they might be coming in. Diatomaceous earth is the fossils of one-cells plants and totally natural. It kills insects by breaking down their waxy exoskeleton and drying them out. It's actually an ingredient in a lot of foods to keep them dry (such as pet kibble), so it's totally safe around (mammal) pets (although, like any powder, it's best not to get too much in your lungs). It takes longer to kill insects than contact killers, but that means they bring it back to the nest and spread it around. I had a hard time finding it locally (checked every hardware and gardening store from Skokie to Edgewater) so I finally got it only at a gardening supply website. It's like $10 for five lbs (aka a lifetime supply). <
