I have been moved to post by the fact that I haven't read livejournal in so long that I can't skip back in my friends page to entries that I've already read. preeyah? not getting straight A's?!!!?!??! *has a stroke* jk.

speaking of Smolin, I'm reading Dawkin's The God Delusion, (which i recommend), and he mentions Smolin a few times. Something about a multiverse. I can't remember if he proposed a cyclical crunch idea, or a cosmological darwinian theory of black hole reproduction. how's his book? what's it about?

Mostly the book is, in fact, about what Lee Smolin thinks the trouble with physics is. He basically talks about the problems with string theory and the physics community's inability to get over string theory. Then he criticizes the general setup of academia. He doesn't mention his own contributions much, but Wikipedia tells me that he came up with the idea of "cosmological natural selection" -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Smolin#Scientific_work.
