Some people argue to share knowledge or to test their own opinions. A person deserves to have an opinion mostly when is given a lot of thought. To hear opposition and to be challanged will either make one's own opinions stronger or allow the person to tailor them. Comfort can be found in assuredness.

The trick is to be able to admit to being wrong. This is in the case of fact or a changed opinion. As for opinions, on one hand you need to be able to uphold and backup those of yours while remaining open to those of others, and on the other hand you should be able to consider the opinions of others so much so that you will know when to change yours, if the challenge should arrive.

I am saying all this as "fact" because assertive writing is more effective than hesitant writing ("perhaps," "i think," "maybe," etc) but it is all obviously the product of my own inferences.
