I've seen this in games before. An old PS1 game called Azura Dreams made you lose all your items, equipment, etc. if the game powered down while you were in the dungeon. Supposedly the feature is supposed to stop people from loading up the game, entering the dungeon, something goes bad, they shut the power off to reset the game and try again.

More often than not it ends up screwing someone over that had a power outage.

Is the mystery dungeon story actually decent? I am loathed to play another pokemon game, even if it does teach me that pants are comfortable and easy to wear.

Oh yeah, dude, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky is worth paying the Used-game price just for the story. I cried a little bit here and there. It's not so child-friendly that it insults an adult player's intelligence, the species-based character interactions between NPCs are amusing to look at, and the plot goes through a few conspiracy-related loops that you'd never think be allowed in a Pokemon game. You have to put up with the aforementioned shitty game mechanics, though ( ... )

My cousin has been playing them, and ranting about how awesome they are, but he is rather spastic and likes strange stuff, so I was under the impression that the game was good, but in an adult swim sunday night programing sort of way.

I would give this a shot if I owned a DS or was expecting to have a lot of free time on my hands. At current, I can't imagine packing up my stylus right before formation, and then having to explain to people that I was playing pokemon.
