So, it seems the time may be approaching. A dark time in the body of my soul that makes me feel as though I am betraying every fibre of my very being, a moment the very implications of which fill me with an irrational dread, a time that shall make many cheer as my darkest soul weeps... The time for me to get a Facebook account ( Read more... )

Funnily enough, I've always said to people: "I'll join Facebook just as everyone goes to find some other new thing. It's exactly what happened with Livejournal." Today I was informed that there are proposals to start charging for Facebook - though there's apparently a pretty big petition to prevent this, but failing that most people will likely jump ship to some alternative.

And so my prophecy shall be fulfilled... Does that make me potentially some kind of social media angel of death or something?

ETA: Idle for something to do while I wait for an egg to boil, I did a quick Google search and found that the Facebook charge thing was a fake blog entry and just a rumour.

I refuse to join as there are several people who I know would seek me out on there, whereas I'd really rather never see them again. I couldn't give a shit what they're doing now and I don't want them to find me.

...don't suppose you could try killing InsaneJournal while you're at it?

I'll be honest, that was one of the things that put me off, also. I would hear everyone talk about old school friends they hadn't seen or work colleagues and the such adding them as friends and that really put me off for a long time.

However, I've asked a lot of questions from people and if I understand it correctly you still have some degree of control as to who can see what you put on there, something akin to LJ. This for me is important, also, on account of not just family but also people I might not want to actually be in touch with. Not that I have anything against my family, but I'm not a fan of the idea of them following the intricacies of my life. Of course, how true this is remains to be seen.

A lot of people suggested I make a fake account so I can at least see how it works before making a proper account. It's still something I might consider doing before actually making an account anyway. That way I know what I want to Facebook to do and what it isn't.

Ah, it's no so bad!

Don't waste your typing fingers sending me a friend invite. Don't use it, never will. I don't mind how many Facebook accounts you create as long as there's still some communication via LJ or IM.

If I do make a Facebook account, I have no intention of leaving LJ, especially since I've tied it into my website.

ETA: I also kind of figured you'd never use it... And considering the numerous invites from friends that I've always ignored, I don't think I'll be inviting anyone to Facebook - especially since I view it as a "necessary evil" as opposed to the "bee's knees".

Yes, join us on facebook!

You can always change your privacy settings so people can't find you on facebook, if you'd rather not be found by certain people..

You can set your posts to 'friends only', and you can control who adds you as a friend (you can let them hang in the 'requested-friendship' state, or simply reject the request).

You can also create groups, so if you make a group 'family' you can make posts that only people in that group can see, or posts that people in that group cannot see. Same as on LJ really.
