1. Sora from Kingdom Hearts
OH GOD SORA. He's... Augh, the sheer amount of emotion I feel for him is ridiculous. I mean, it must feel like the most bizarre dream ever. You look out the window one night to see a storm, go over and suddenly, you're being attacked by liquid shadow and your home is destroyed. Next thing you know, you're in some weird, unknown town being chased by the shadows again, and just... Your friends are gone, you keep hearing "chosen one, chosen one, Keyblade wielder" and fuck, really, what the hell is going on?
So you go on and forge ahead as best you can, feeling like maybe one day you'll just wake up to find out that this is all some really awesome (really scary) dream. But the more and more you go into this, the less like a dream it is, this is real. Your friends are missing. Your island is totally destroyed. You're on a quest to save the world. And just when you get one friend back, the other goes missing, and then there's a year of your life mysteriously gone (and you don't remember the white castle of lies and how it changed you until you were a barely recognizable shell of yourself). So you go off to save the world once more, but this time.... This time the lines are being blurred.
The Organization is confusing the issue, because they're bad guys, right? But they want you to keep killing Heartless, and the Heartless are bad, but so are these guys and you don't... want to help them, but you don't want the Heartless to kill everything.
It's the most Catch-22 situation you've ever encountered, and maybe you feel a little bad for them. They might be lying, but it must be awful to be aware and emotionless. But they have to go, everyone says so, they're hurting people, and you must be so tired at this point. So much fighting, and you know that one friend is safe (but oh wait, no she's not, not really) but the other one is out there, missing, and you just want the three of you together again. Because Riku has always looked after you, and you're tired of looking after yourself. You want someone to have your back in the steady way that Riku always did. And then there he is, back with you right when you need him most and now you feel like you can do this again.
...Whoops, I second-personed all over that. Um. POINT IS, I think that Sora reacts to his situation like any 14 year old with the power to save the world would. "Hey, this is kinda cool, yeah sure, let's do this" but I think that he has the potential for this ... dragging, well-deep sort of sadness and tiredness, and it's really remarkable that he never lets it take him.
2. Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy 8
Alright, let's try to keep this shorter, shall we? Squall is fucking gorgeous and I adore him to pieces, because he's just the sort of dry sarcasm that gets me every single time. I like how he's a good leader because people just look to him and he's forced into it, and I love how uncomfortable he is with that fact. Rinoa, however, is like some sort of toxic self-doubt poison that infects him. Rrrgh, she makes me angry sometimes. BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT. Also, Squall's appropriation of a fucking spaceship has always made me laugh. He's just like "Yeah... my spaceship now bitches." And no one calls him on it.
3. Sheik from the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Sheik is the ninja I always wanted to be and fuck the canon, he's totally a separate person and I will believe that until the day I die, before I even shipped Link/Sheik I was convinced that there was no way Zelda could be Sheik. Seriously, he's amazing and there are so many ways you can tilt his characterization that can give his actions so many shades of meaning.
4. Sokka from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Sokka is a dude who takes his role as family protector seriously and takes life seriously, but doesn't think that that means life can't be a joke. I adore Sokka so much, because he's just ... aaugh, he's so wonderful. It must have been difficult to be the older brother of the only Waterbender in this tribe, and getting dragged along on this harebrained adventure where the one in charge is a cosmic twelve-year old, but man, Sokka does it well. Never lets it get him too down, looks after everyone, plus there's that whole thing with him and pretty much everyone because SOKKA GETS IT ON~.
5. Silk from The Belgariad
Okay, this one most people probably won't recognize, but dude, everyone needs to read the Belgariad. It is... It's the book series that got me into fantasy and sci-fi. Silk is a thief and a scoundrel, and he's marvelous while doing it too. He steals because he can, is afraid of confined spaces and places he doesn't know where the exits are. He was the original smarmy guy that basically defined the type of humor I like.
HE'S TOO MUCH FOR ME TO DEFINE IN SUCH A CONFINED SPACE, GO READ THE BOOKS.
I'm sure there are more that I could do (*cough Seifer cough*)
