I don't know if you have a K-Mart near you or not, but they have really inexpensive furniture. Ken and I got our kitchen table and four chairs for $99. Also, Goodwill can have some nice furniture/household extras depending on the store. Finally, depending on how cheap you want to get, the Dollar Tree specifically furnished most of our kitchen really well. They have pretty much everything for starting up :)
Yeah we have a k-mart...but the one that is in town is totally crappy and such. I dont usually go in there because I feel that something is going to fall on me.
Although I did find a nintendo Wii just after it came out at K-Mart. I guess im not the only one that doesnt go there. The only other thing i need, kithcen wise, is some pots and pans. Target had a decent full set (1 pot, 2 different skillets, a sauce pan and see through lids) for like $99 (or $150 for stainless steel ones). And some generic cheap things like mixing bowls and measuring spoons. Those I could get at like Dollar General.
As for dining set, I havent begun to look. The place I went to is Ashleys Furniture...which is a little higher on the cost scale in town. I am hoping that up to $800 bonus to tax rebates goes through up at Washington. It wont help anybody whos really behidn in mortgage payments, but it would help me buy a couch! (Ashleys furniture had this super comfy couch for $600...a bit much for a couch but it was soo deliciously soft and comfy)
I don't know if things like Craigslist do furniture, too, but it might be a good place to look. We have Gumtree, where sometimes people give away things like sofas. Someone I work with got a good sofa for nothing, as long as he picked it up.
craigslist and second-hand stores, my friend! If you're looking for good stuff, just browse the second-hand stores till you find the expensive second-hand stuff. Also, aside from what furniture you DESPERATELY need, wait until furniture places have end-of year or other sales again.
I am gonna look at some used furniture at the salvation place. Bookcases, a table, etc...however I dont know if I want to buy a couch used. While its cheaper...people do things on couches: get sick, spill things, naughty things, etc. :X
