widescreen wednesday - DM2 and PacRim
Despicable Me 2 was nowhere near as fun as its first outing. There were no really crazy gadgets, even though the submarine car was very James Bond.
and the plot really had nowhere to go.
while there were a lot more minions and some cute songs sung by the minions, they felt very tacked on. indeed they have a life of their own on youtube, not needing any reference to the events in the movie.
and agnes didn't have any cute lines or actions. "are you single?" doesn't quite make the cut.
but it wasn't bad. i still enjoyed it and laughed a lot. it just could have been a lot better.

pacific rim is big and noisy and has giant robots fighting giant monsters. if that sounds like a movie you might like then that's all you need to know. It does big and noisy and giant robots fighting giant monsters VERY WELL. and in 3D too if that is your kind of thing.
if you need a little bit more of a metaphor in your movies consider this. what comes out of the ocean to lay waste to cities? they come in categories with 4 being something cities can just about survive for while 5 would overwhelm their defences. they are even given names. In recent years they have not only increased in strength but also frequency. Scientists argue over their cause and the best way to prevent or defend against them.
but you don't really need to think very much at all to enjoy this movie. and there is a fair bit of comic relief to lighten up the darkness. and while there are buildings and vehicles getting smashed, technically humans are hiding in shelters so relatively few innocent bystanders are killed in the relentless mayhem.
