There's not much you can't salvage by dying it black- black covers everything. I would use Rit (available at the grocery) unless ther's a compelling reason not to, and the stove top method to save your washing machine from being dyed.

Good for you! Post before and after pictures (at least of the successes, unless you think it's worth a laugh. But of course they're all going to be successes, right? Right!).

"Worth a laugh" may describe all these projects! But what the heck, right?

That's a great idea! I love projects that have "if I screw up, no worse off than I was" as part of their mission.

I've seen a lot of stuff dyed with Rit, and it all sucked. I think Rit is formulated for synthetics, not natural fabrics. I would never buy it given any other option.

We do our own tie-dyeing, and get all our dyes from Dharma Trading; they also have tips and techniques on their website, so they're a good resource.

If you want to experiment with natural dyes, you're in luck -- you live in the Black Walnut zone. Those suckers make fabulous black dye that will indeed cover everything.

I strongly suggest a dedicated dye-pot, just because.

Good information, thanks! I'll check out Dharma Trading. I didn't know Black Walnuts made a dye. Hm. Does it dye hair? And yes - dedicated dye-pot, definitely. When I used to do Sculpey/Fimo, I had a toaster over that was dedicated to curing the stuff because of the toxic fumes.

That list includes recipes, dyeing tips, etc. The color you get is more of a black-brown than a true black, but the difference is only obvious in bright light.
