This is interesting hereSo, this guy is a double below-the-knee amputee. He has special carbon-fiber racing prosthetics made for him, and by virtue of their construction, they seem to have made him a more efficient runner than an "able-bodied" athlete ( Read more... )

"Now we have the science."

But I mean really, if they let him compete--how long until athletes are having part of their legs amputated and getting the prosthetics?

And shouldn't they just be happy he didn't test positive for steroids?

It's like that surgery for your arm that can improve your baseball pitch. I can't remember all the details, but a pitcher had surgery to correct some torn ligaments, they loop them around in some crazy figure-eight patter or something, and he actually improved on his pre-injury skills. So lots of pitchers started wanting this as an elective surgery to get better.

Well, if other athletes aren't dedicated enough to amputate their legs, then they don't deserve to win! And I mean that un-sarcastically.

Balanchine ruined ballet (in some ways) because his style has forced every professional female ballet dancer to weigh 96 lbs. While this is kind of lame, it's also "so what?" Ballet, like running, is not equal opportunity.

So anyway, I think sports would be way more interesting if there were no drug/surgery/etc restrictions. It would be all these crazy looking, drugged-up people with fucked up looking bodies. It would be total performance art! I would so watch baseball if people had bionic arms :D
