recommending a laptop

The Polish guy at work asked me to recommend a laptop for his daughter. She is going to college next year. First off, I told him he should really check with the school for any specific things they like students to have. I suggested either the Dell 600 series, or the G4 iBook. I'm a bit hesitant to try to pimp the Apple, because she has only used ( Read more... )

On a college campus you'd be amazed at how much less stress not having to deal with viruses, spyware or CompSci script kiddies will outweigh the problem of dealing with a new operating system ( ... )

Security lock.. good idea, han't thought of that. One nice thing about Apple is that they are the only ones who repair the machines, so if it's stolen and EVER goes in for repairs they will notify you that they have your machine (provided you let them know it was stolen in advance)

OS X has a pretty powerfull firewall built in, and the option to use 128 bit on-the-fly encryption for the entire home folder. ( http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/security/ )

Still, it would be better to have some sort of firewalling within the Airport itself.

At the least, it should be configured so others can't use it. That way no one would be able to use her WiFi connection to do things that would get traced back to her room and have her connection shut off for breaking some bit of the school's AUP.
