Pertussis

It would appear that I have whooping cough. Evidently there's been an uptake in adult cases in recent years.

It's not so bad...I'm actually just relieved that I now know what's going on. There's just not a lot I can do and the coughing could last for up to 90 days.

We had to be re-vaccinated against Pertussis because the vaccine wears off after 10 years or so :( I had a pt with it in the PICU a while ago, but he was a baby. It's a sucky disease for kids, and I bet it sucks for adults, too.

Its worse for kids and very dangerous for babies. The worst symptoms I've gotten is coughing fits to the point of vomiting a couple of times and the feeling of not being able to get enough air (those were the clues that it wasn't the common cold).

FEEL BETTER SOON! Generally it's self-limiting, although watch for any serious reactions from coughs (like compromised breathing). Hopefully by now or pretty soon you'll be over the hump.

If you've been in contact with infants or other immunocompromised people before the onset of cough, it might be a good idea to give them a heads-up that you have it because that is when it's most contagious. TAKE CARE!

I'm sorry, that sucks!

On the other hand, though, now you and I can form a Lingering Disease club.
