They changed the definition of a planet to exclude Pluto (and a few other weird space things and asteroids), leaving only 8. Otherwise, we'd have about 13 planets, or some odd number.
It won't stand. The new definition of planet is totally confusing and only has the support of about 5% of the world's astronomers. It'll probably be overturned. But, even then, Pluto might still be ruled too small to be a planet.
