What happened?

My laptop quit on me very suddenly and apparently, permanently. I was just picking it up and it unceremoniously went black, shutting off completely. I try pressing the power button and... nothing. And it appears that the warranty/service plan has lapsed. The one extremely good thing about this is that I have just about everything except emails
