True equality is only possible in an environment of unflinching clarity.

Be that as it may, what do you say about spirit vs letter of the law?

It's absurd to think that a government can have a fair legal system with no exceptions to any laws on the books. Unflinching clarity, yes, I could agree with that, but I think exceptions help clarity in most cases, even though it's sometimes misused.

In the perfect legal/moral system, the spirit vs. law distinction is irrelevant and non-existent.

My point here however is an indictment of the people who would cry for personal exceptions in the name of "fairness". They don't want fair - they want unfair _in their favour_.
