yeesh about aspartame! i'm glad i don't eat/drink anything with that in it (to my knowledge, anyway.) although...i heard that the belief about too much sugar leading to diabetes is an old myth that has been proven wrong. still, too much sugar is definitely bad for you either way; my teeth are in bad shape from having too much over the years :p
What I find scary are parents giving their kids the bottled pure water, instead of tap water with fluoride. Of course they're sugar loaded and all end up with teeth decay o_o
What I learnt in nutrition was that a high sugar diet (high GI) will lead to diabetes, because the body gradually loses its sensitivity to insulin. Insulin response is like a rubber band, and if you think of that ananlogy the band gets stretched to the point where it no longer retains its original shape. GI is more important than sugar content, because everything is converted to glucose when the body absorbs it. It's the rate (low GI v. high) which is important.
Australia's really dodgy in terms of what substances are illegal and what isn't, since we get a lot of products from the US and rich nations.
It's very had to keep track of ingredients, because it's never specifically stated. I've been more aware of stuff since your first aspartame mentioning a few posts back. The hardest thing here is, there are specific artificial colours and flavours with 100+ side effects, but the actual number/name is never mentioned on packaging, just a collective "flavours"
Just the other day I discovered that TimTams (biscuits) contain substance illegal across Europe and other places but Arnott's happily sells the stuff here o__o and I used to snack on them 24hours a day...scary stuff
I knew Aspartame was bad for you, but I was ignorant. I used to have like 5 cans of diet coke a day, but that's beacuse Aspartame can destroy the Mylean Sheaths (sp?) which covers nerve cells. This plus other factors make the body think it's thirsty CONSTANTLY. I've havent had diet anything for 3 weeks and I do feel a lot better. But I do feel thirsty all the time, that might go away in time, so I've been drinking regular coke and water.
It is best to read the ingredients before you buy anything. Since there are also other chemicals like Guar Gum, I'll have to talk about that one next time :P *makes people nervous*
