Dar Williams and Girlyman

Wow. I haven't been to a concert in a nice long time, and this was the perfect way to get back into it. I ended up going at the last minute, even though no one could go with me and I wasn't sure that I wanted to spent the money on it, but I did it anyway. So worth it! The opening band was Girlyman, who I'd never heard before, and they were ( Read more... )

Hi there!
I love Girlyman! They opened for the Indigo Girls awhile back and I bought their CD then. The CD I have (their first) is good, but they were even better live. I love Dar, too, but I've seen her twice now and I actually love her more on CD. She had this tendency at her shows to talk, and talk, and talk, a lot...I kind of just wanted her to stop talking and sing a little bit, you know? She's still amazing, though. Do you have her new album?

I actually like it when she rambles on and on and on. Her craziness is part of her charm. And yes, I bought the new CD. I definitely like her older stuff better, but I like this album as well. She does "Comfortably Numb" with Ani DiFranco on this CD and it's pretty cool. =)

Amen to both of my sister's comments. I only know a few Girlyman songs that Meg put on CD, but I REALLY lik ethem. They last 2 times I saw Dar in concert she played loads of stuff I didn't know & talked a lot. The Williamsburg showwas definetly better that the Birchmere fun. :) I think she played all my fav's @ that show. Yay for independent Rita! :) Rock it out girl! :P

Yes, you should have bought both the Girlyman CDs. I love it when they play a full set - they were good when I saw them with Dar, but it *just wasn't enough*. WE've seen them every time they've come to charlottesville, which has been like 5 or 6 times since Flashbulb Diary opened for them the first time. Remember Who I Am is an excellent CD, and while I like Little Star better technically, there's just a special place in my heart for their first album. I highly suggest you buy the CD directly from Daemon Records, since, especially if you can find anybody else who wants an album (and really, what a great gift idea!), it's cheaper than the link on their site.
Also, remind me to give you a copy of Girlyman Live @ The Gravity Lounge. The levels are bad for the first track or so, but after that, it's awesome.

I wish I had thought to look them up whenever their songs came up on yours and nishmael's little "current music" thing. I would have loved to know some of their songs before seeing them last night. And I'm definitely going to buy the first album now. I'm kicking myself for not buying it last night. And I completely agree that them playing for Dar wasn't quite enough for me.
Are you in NoVa or Charlottesville right now?

Yup! I'm sorry I didn't call you last night - I decided to go at the last minute and barely got there in time for the show to start. I'll give you a call later and maybe we can go get coffee or something this week when you're not busy with work and grad classes. =)
