....so. The vampires can attack a church camp and hide inside a church, but bullets with crosses carved on them are deadly weapons against them? I mean, granted, a bullet with a cross carved into it would stop me, but man oh man, you need to decide on your folklore.

I think it's that a physical cross cannot touch them. It's the shape that holds the power. But then again I'm just going from what I've heard...>_>;

Vampires don't have a rumor mill; it's not like you only "hear" of thing they supposedly did--there are books on this. They are a part of documented folklore, and each region's version of them is different. These just don't currently fit any of the types, which means they're more vague and less believable as actual preternatural beings, and simple research can fix this.
  • Vampires are said to be unable to walk on consecrated ground, such as those of churches or temples or cross running water. [from "Vampirglaube und Vampirsage auf dem Balkan"]
  • During the nights when "all the evil things in the world will have full sway," the people kept their houses lit and used apotropaics such as thorns, crosses and garlic to prevent the vampires from entering their homes. [from Stoker's Dracula]

Okay, here's the thing. The cross is a symbol held sacred by followers of Christ. Demons, aka vampy bad things, have been cast out by God/Jesus Christ/Holy Ghost. So, a symbol representing such beliefs whether it be wooden, on the the tip of a bullet, or slashed into the vampire's chest--it's gonna burn like hell as a constant reminder of what they cannot have. Since Jesus says in Matthew that all who wish to be his disciples must take up the cross and follow him, those who are against him are rejected by the cross ( ... )
