burning down the house

Caught The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra last night. Marriss Jansons is apparently “one of the great maestros of our age” - Su2 asked me earlier why/how people get to be called Maestro - and I couldn’t answer. Now I can.

I’m over familiar with Stravinskys Firebird - it’s something I’ve grown up with and wasn’t that excited about hearing. It’s had ( Read more... )

Doesn't Maestro just mean teacher?

Ok, well it does in Italian and Spanish anyways...any form of teacher is Maestro or Maestra.

Bah...I hate it when they use foreign words to emphasize something. Although I would say that Solti was a pretty great Maestro...

It probably means that as well, actually...will have to check on it, but it really probably does.

I always think of it as 'teacher' though becuase...well, I've had Italian and Spanish teachers. Lots of them. And they were all Maestra/o.

I think over-familiar pieces are the most telling regarding how talented musicians actually are and your description is fabulous. Exactly what I mean about classical music that I can never express properly. Damn you. The Vienna Philharmonic are always incredible though. My oboe teacher at G. used to play with them. He was completely mad, but made me almost enjoy playing the instrument. Maestro.

p.s; Was it the Warsaw Philharmonic's Gorecki's 3rd you were after? I bought it today in a record shop on The Strand while trying to scab a christmas job. They had more than one copy.

For the first time I was unsure how to start an entry in my jotter, because I wanted to say something about the gig but was very much aware that it would writhe away from any attempt. Also hanging over me was the fact that I had recently read someone managing to write about music far more eloquently than I knew I ever could. I don’t think I’ve recently rubbed your nose in the fact that I feel like a writing neophyte compared to you, so hush.

Yes, Warsaw, yes. I will make an attempt to find it next time I’m "up west" - tho I’m now finding recorded music a little unresponsive.

Sorry I’ve been out of touch, a few days of deep ugly and another few of stomach upset have made me very low(er) profile. Assuming I don’t get to see you and H before you flee then please make sure I have your new IRL addies and I’ll send you traditional freshers gifts of booze and contraceptives.

PS: you just keep mentioning oboes - as if it's an accident.

Made of music...

I've been looking for a description of how great music makes me feel, and there it is. Perfectly.
