I had a strange experience. I don't know if I had fallen asleep (and possibly dreaming) or that I was in the drifty place just before sleep. I physically felt and heard a shot ring out on the left side of my head near my temple. I felt the pain, my heart was racing even before I knew what was happening. It scared me but not enough to completely ( Read more... )

Sounds like text book Exploding head syndrome. It's harmless if somewhat disconcerting.

Oh my gosh! Thank you! I didn't even know anything about this. I'm guessing you've also experienced something like this?

I have not experienced that particular phenomenon but I have a deep interest in all things related to sleep particularly hypnagogic and REM related phenomena. Anything to do with dreams or pseudo-dream states fascinates me. Well to be honest a lot of things fascinate me ( ... )

Thank you so much again for bringing this to my attention. I can totally relate to the curiosity and research. I worked a job where people used to call me "Cliff Clavin" from Cheers because I always wanted to know more details to what most people viewed as useless facts.

Your information was certainly relevant to me!

If you were close by, I'd love to take you to lunch and learn more about your interests...that speaks to my endless fascination to other people's fascinations!

Wow, that's crazy. I've had loud noises that didn't exist wake me up before but the above link to the Exploding Head Syndrome is really interesting.

I experienced something a bit similar a few years ago and had no clue about what it might be. I heard a clap of thunder, though there was no thunder storm. And I couldn't feel my hands at all for about 10 seconds, which seemed to be an eternity. I woke up yelling in panic. I'm glad it didn't occur again. I found the experience somewhat traumatizing.

I know, right? I feel much relief after what ncalrod wrote. For me, knowing is half the battle. I'm guessing it hasn't happen since for you?
