Thank you for blogging your trip in such detail. I'm enjoying your posts.

How do people know how much chlorine to put in their water? Have there been any problems from overchlorinated water?

I wondered about that too, but it turns out not to be much of a problem. Almost everyone in the area carries water in 20-litre yellow plastic containers (these standard containers are ubiquitous and used for everything; people also cut them up and make things out of them). Bottles of WaterGuard at the store have instructions that say to use one capful of WaterGuard (which is 3 mL) in 20 litres of water.

The chlorine dispensers have a valve that releases 3 mL at a time, and are painted with instructions that tell you to turn the valve once for a 20-litre container.

If you add too much chlorine to water, it makes the water taste bad before it actually becomes unhealthy. So people tend not to add too much; the challenge is convincing them to add it at all.

You called it a trip but I think it’s quite an adventure to spend a night in a hotel with a bathroom that looks like this one; I’m not sure I’d have that kind of guts.

For future reference, electric showers are usually all-or-nothing on the electricity, so you can get hotter water by turning the flow rate down or cooler water by turning the flow rate up.

Also, be careful to test the water before you get too wet to see if it's electrified. Some places have these things on a GFCI as they should, but some don't. I had a fun experience in a Peruvian hotel room once. (And I was always nervous about coming close to the light switches when I was wet. 240VAC packs a punch.)

These rooms don't look much like Chicago hotel rooms but I would love a travel experience in Africa, nothing could compare with that. Thanks for sharing the information, coming from a tourist this information is priceless.
