Although I heard that Zambia is a poorer country than Kenya, there was a surprisingly upscale strip mall attached to the hotel where we were staying in Lusaka. This is what the entrance to the movie theater looked like:

I dont know what measure that was used by your informants who told you that Zambia is poorer than Kenya. If its GDP per capita then Kenya at $770 is poorer than Zambia with a per caita income of $1050.

The statistics are based on the so called "buying power" so if GDP per capita is higher in Zambia than Kenya it just means the Zambian government is stealing more.
