Do you know Matt Biddulph (ex Dopplr CTO)? He just moved to Berlin and could certainly give you some tips.

The walking tours are a brilliant way to learn about the history of the city. I'm a big fan of faded communist glory, so the TV tower (with a fantastic slightly shabby rotating restaurant at the top) is a must. Nat and I also thoroughly enjoyed Berlin Zoo, with its celebrity polar bear (Knut, look him up on YouTube) and excellent nocturnal house.

The conference is all of 250 meters from the TV tower. Apparently you want to get tickets a day or two in advance, especially over the holiday.
