At least in my family it's tacky. My hubby didn't understand until he went to a wedding with a cash bar and didn't know it. Personally I would rather have no alcohol than opt for a cash bar.

I agree with you, which is why we're going to provide some alcohol, just not a fully stocked bar. I just don't know if we should be prepared to offer wine as well as beer and champagne. ..Or we could do only wine and champagne and forego the beer all together since wine is way more classy...
It depends on your attendees. Hubby's family would have been happy with beer only. My family wants open bar for cocktails.
We bought our alcohol and brought it in for the bartneder instead of paying for the mark up through the hall. Not many people asked for wine and we had a bit left over. If someone drinks wine, they usually don't want to cheap stuff that is on the bar in the first place.
