Today was parent visit day (naturally, making me wish my parents and family were visiting) and it sure was hectic! Kids not only had their parents come, but also their siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. We had over 2000 extra people around campus. And they were all PACKED with food, bringing whole cakes and loads of candy and toys for their ( Read more... )

Ah, the joys of awkward authoritative trumping. It's almost as if everyone would be better off if the parents didn't visit...then again, I suppose they do occasionally want to see their kids, despite (I'm sure) enjoying the break from parenting themselves. Tour days at DePaul always mean good food in the caf- almost makes the swarms of high school kids (and worse, their parents) worthwhile. Also, eating healthy is good, just don't start to obsess over it or get all guilty-feeling if you gorge every so often.

And joing the GLC Facebook group, dagnabit!

I can't access facebook on this computer - it's blocked, we figured out a way around it but it's so slow I don't want to bother. I went tubing today, and it was AWESOME!

Why block facebook? It's like blocking google because children might use it to search for questionable content.

I think it's because in the past few years several camps have had problems with things like this:

A counselor writes on his or her myspace about how many people he hooked up with at camp and then goes on to complain about little brats, perhaps by names.

A child's parents hear a lot about a certain counselor, and decide to see if that counselor is on myspace - they're curious about who their child is being influenced by.

The child's parents find the negative information about the counselor on the myspace account and contact the camp.

The camp has a problem they have to deal with...

this has actually happened. More than once. So for this reason, myspace (reasonably) has been blocked. And because we as a generation also use facebook, despite the fact you can't access our profiles without concent or a university id at the same university as said counselor, they blocked that as well. good thing they don't know/not enough people use lj!
