I've created a writing LJ, to post writing schtuffs in it. If you are so interested, it is:
tally_writes.
I've yet to post anything though lol. Baby steps.
And now a book meme that I took from a long ago post in
arieswriting:
1) Which book has been on your shelves the longest?
The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkein
2) What is your current read, your last read and the book you’ll read next?
Current: "Microserfs" by Douglas Coupland
Last: "Shanhai, Baby" by Wei Hui
Next: Probably either some shorts by Stephen King if I can find it, or "After Dark" by Haruki Murakami
3) What book did everyone like and you hated?
"Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer. I'm trying not to be a B about it anymore, though.
4) Which book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t?
"The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath, "Don Quixote" by Cervantes, and other either incredibly long or incredibly depressing classics.
5) Which book are you saving for “retirement?”
See above! LoL. Why would I save a book I actually want to read?
6) Last page: read it first or wait til the end?
Wait, of course. There's a reason it's last.
7) Acknowledgements: waste of ink and paper or interesting aside?
Academy Award acceptance speeches: waste of airtime or good TV?
8) Which book character would you switch places with?
Hermione Granger in Harry Potter. Or, realistically, Elizabeth Wakefield, not in Sweet Valley High, but the mini-series where she went to England and snagged herself a Viscount. But book people lead incredibly difficult lives.
9) Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time)?
S.E. Hinton's everything will remind me of 7th and 8th grade. "Snow Falling on Cedars" will remind me of a dance in high school that a couple of friends did representing the story. I think it was the most moving dance I'd ever seen, and it was done by high schoolers - most likely because high schoolers can probably identify most closely with the plot of the book.
10) Name a book you acquired in some interesting way.
My uncle brought the first couple Harry Potters for us from England before the giant North American boom. I distinctly remember what he said: "They're pretty popular in England, but who knows here?"
11) Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?
N ... o.
12) Which book has been with you to the most places?
No clue. Probably S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" (who saw that coming?) because I read it everyday in the 7th grade. Or Don Quixote, because I took it with me cross Canada, and still only read half of it.
13) Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad ten years later?
Nope. I read anything that interested me before we ruined it in class, and the things that didn't interest me got ruined.
14) What is the strangest item you’ve ever found in a book?
A two-dollar Canadian bill.
15) Used or brand new?
Usually brand new, because there aren't a lot of used bookstores in my area. However, I really don't care either way, so long as it's readable.
16) Stephen King: Literary genius or opiate of the masses?
I've only ever read "On Writing" so I can't adequately reply. I hate horror, but that is because I scare ridiculously easily (Prisoner of Azkaban kept me up at night). I loved "On Writing" though. I think he's probably somewhere in between.
17) Have you ever seen a movie you liked better than the book?
Oy, Mars ... Legally Blonde was a book?! Weird. And my answer is "The Devil Wears Prada."
18) Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?
I'm going to piss off a lot of people, but I read "Slumdog Millionaire" before watching it, and I think the movie got it all wrong. They missed some of the most genius things about the book, distorted the plot and characters beyond recognition and changed the main character's name - I really think they should have named it something else, and given a "based on" credit to Slumdog Millionaire the book, although it's good PR the way they did it I guess. And it was a good movie in it's own right.
19) Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?
Probably my dad's, because he introduced me to T.C. Boyle. Just his books lol.
