Look real quick because I don't think that I should really be posting this. This picture of Martha Washington in her youth is a drawing I did for work. I am not that great of an artist to where I can just knock out a couple of these during a single day, but something like this is my best work.

A few people, both in real-life and virtual reality, have told me that the previous picture of this woman disturbs them. They think, as I have been told, that the color on her face doesn't really work for them. This was drawn entirely from imagination (duh!), which is why the proportions are all messed up. But, I think I am zeroing in on my personal style somewhat. I also think I am getting better at drawing figures, and that is a good thing since I need way more practice at it.

I have finally moved, so I should have more time for making some artwork and whatnot. My focus is more on learning and improving my technique rather than trying to express something with my work. Eventually, I think I will get to the point where the technique will serve my artistic goals for expression, but right now, it's all about the practice ( Read more... )

The other day, I came across a link to a rare animation book written by Ken Hultgren. The book is out of print, so it was super-awesome that someone posted it. I think you can still find it here: ArgleBargle. Anyway, I decided that I would try to do some practice based on the pages that were posted there.

This sketch is overworked and not very good. But that is not to say that I didn't learn stuff from it. For example, I think I did a good job using the eraser as a reverse drawing tool. Normally, I just fix mistakes with it, but this time I used it to blend some of the pencil and "draw" highlights.

This was one of my practice sketches. As you can see, it is drawn with a non-photo blue pencil, so I had to get my scanner into some interesting contortions in order for it to show up below. Therefore, the image quality is extremely poor. One of the many things that I need to work on that I notice from this sketch is proportion.

I've been packing up a lot today and getting some chores done. I need to move by the end of the month. I've discovered that I have about seven sketchbooks. I didn't think I had that many.
