* Went to contractor drinks tonight with the company I am employed by. Very useful night. I wasn't really sure if I was getting industry-standard rates or not.. I wasn't sure if their take was normal or not.. in short, I was worried I was being ripped off simply because I didn't know any better. From what I've seen of redfern (admittedly only walking to and from uni to the station) it seems fine. I think Tamworth was a great deal more dangerous (or any rural area really.)

It's certainly no worse than living in Toongabbie me thinks... Not that I ever had any trouble there. But the place was not short of its fair share of skanks...

There was the same attitude to Redfern when I lived there twenty five years ago! (eeek!) There are some parts, as you say, that you would prudently avoid, especially at night. I used to describe Great Buckingham Street as Redfern Heights. There was never any real concern with safety there. Our cars were parked on the street and the worst thing that happened was that someone bent the radio aerial on my car. That could happen anywhere.
