So I say something like "heroyam slava" which is clearly Ukrai-glish because "hero" is the word in English. Well he looks at me and laughs, so clearly it wasn't even close to right,

Actually if you pronounced it phonetically, it would've been pretty close - :) (I never thought about it, but I guess English and Russian/Ukrainian borrowed the same word from Greek, and just changed the way they pronounce it)

thanks, yeah, I actually pronounced it like English so not correct and clearly ukrai-glish, but oh well :)
