The Emperors of the Han Dynasty believed in theurgy. They believed that if one builds high and steep pavilion, he can meet Immortals.

i second this :) although theurgy seems to be a term of art for similar practices in certain Western cultures. If you don't want to use the term of art, you could substitute "supernatural arts".
