It all started when Violet Suki posted a journal about a sculpture of the Dying Gaulish (you can read it here). And then too_beauty made the comment that if Phai had fought naked, tons of distracted soldiers had surely fallen under his spell. I'm glad you put Gao story here for many reasons: first it's so interesting and beautiful, yet sad too; second I know so little of Chinese history that I wouldn't miss an opportunity for learning some bits of it, and, third, I like very much the comparison between Gao and Hephaistion and I found it very striking. By the way, all pictures are gorgeous, but I prefer most the third, with a sorrowful look, and the last one, where he appears aware of his tragic destiny.

i think who reminds me most to Hephaestion is Han Zigao (韩子高)
they both had talent and bravery, and , love from the king.

The drawings are beautiful and I agree with you in regard to the sad tragic life of a great loyal general.. I had been searching the web endlessly for any story about him so thank you for your post..
