Do you have a child that is afraid of dogs?

Dec 20, 2010 10:54

OK, this is my first post on the live journal. And I hope I can get a few answers.

I know many readers here are mothers. So let me tell you something that bothers me.

My son Joey, who is seven-year-old, is very afraid of dogs.

When he was born in 2003, we had a big hybrid German Shepard dog at home. Joey had absolute so problem with that, actually ( Read more... )

I think Joey never understood what happened to your dog. That he died. Have you asked Joey's doctor about this? If he wasn't traumatized by dogs before and actually loved dogs there might be an underlying reason he doesn't like them now. Being terrified is something he needs to deal with. Maybe he should see a counselor.

have you asked him directly why he doesn't like dogs?

I hope this helps.

Hi Linda

Thank you so much for the message. You left the first message on my live journal!

When the dog died two years ago Steve buried it in the woods and told Joey the dog went to heaven with great-aunt Elizabeth, who passed away some time earlier. Joey seems to be sad but not overly distraught.

Ever since that we have fish as pets as well, and you know fish don't live long. We have to restock them on a regular base. Joey is sad every time a fish died, but he got the idea that pets don't live forever.

You are quite right, Lureen, the important things are Joey and his feelings, all other things are not important. Actually, I have heard nothing but genuine concerns and care about this issue.

I took Joey to the library and with the help of some very kind librarian found a bunch of children's books about lovely and loyal dogs. I am going to read them to him this week, and see if that helps! I have also ordered several nice dog movies - HealthyLuv gave me a list - and we will see how that works out as well! LOL!

Thanks again Lureen you are a real friend!

Oh, I am sorry to hear that you suffered an ectopic pregnancy. I know that situation is very painful and dangerous as well. Take good care of yourself.

I wish you best luck in recovery and a healthy baby in the coming year!

Hi Hua,
I don't have an answer. I can only say that I loved dogs until I was six y.o. Unfortunately at that age I was playing with a dog and he bit me. I though we were friends and I never got over it and even now I watch dogs but I don't touch them.
Is there the possibility that your lovely Joey thinks that the dog left him? Death is hard to understand.
A big hug
Roby

Hi Roby,

Thank you for the message.

Joey has never met a mean dog, and of course I won't let any dog that might bite to be near him. But then, I know many person including kids are bit by their own pets.

I think it is more that the little fierce dog who barked and showed his white shining teeth that scared him. Now I think about it, it is a little bit scary!
