- A Day by Super Junior
There were familiar fingers threading themselves through Jae's hair when he woke up. A feeling of comfort, warmth and home spreading through his stomach as he shifted his aching body in the uncomfortable chair, his face pressed against a hard mattress. He sighed as he broke from sleep, his eyes remained closed but his body became accustomed to the surroundings. He could hear soft talking, low beeps and the sound of wheels on linoleum floor. The smell of a sterile white and the feeling of sickness overwhelmed him, his eyes snapping open. A hospital. He was in a hospital.
“Good morning..” A voice said softly from nearby. Jae's head whipped around, his messy blonde hair getting in his eyes.
“YunHo...” He said, blinking at the man on the hospital bed, his face pale, but his lips curling into a smile.
“I'm sorry we fought.” The man said, his voice sounded raw and hoarse, almost as if he had been screaming.
“Oh god, YunHo.” Jae said, leaping from the uncomfortable chair and onto the bed, his arms wrapping around the man before him, his face pressed into the curve of his neck. “I was so scared.” Tears were threatening to fall again, but Jae pushed them down. “I thought I'd lost you.”
“But you didn't. It's okay... I'm okay.” YunHo embraced him firmly.
“You're okay.” Jae nodded, smiling brightly and pulling away, trying with everything he had not to kiss the man in such a public place. “When the doctors took you away... I thought you were going to die.”
“But I didn't die.” YunHo said, smiling and threading his fingers back through Jae's hair. “You look so beautiful with blond hair. It looks so good on you... Maybe I should dye my hair blond.” The man mused, his eyes unfocused. Jae smiled, pulling the fingers from his head and pressing his lips to the tip.
“Do you remember?”
“No. I remember the pain, and I remember you crying, and ChangMin bossing everyone around.” YunHo chuckled, shaking his head slightly, “But after that it's just brief glimpses. The ambulance and the emergency room.”
“It was pretty awful.” Jae said, looking down. “They said it was Super Glue.”
“It wasn't very nice. I definitely won't be having Super Glue again.” YunHo smiled, squeezing Jae's hand in his. “What happened?”
“Well... YooChun called the ambulance, and they drove as fast as they could to the hospital. You said you wanted me to come with you, and you were... It was like you were having a fit. The paramedics said your body was rejecting and fighting against the Glue. When we got here, they took you away and when the others arrived it was almost a panic. No one knew what was going on and YooChun had to deal with my crazy, and JunSu was trying to take care of ChangMin. YunHo, he was losing it. At the studio he seemed so calm and on top of things... But as soon as we got here, he flipped out. JunSu had to try and calm him down, the best he could. Manager hyung was on the phone. I think he called your parents, maybe some others... Then, after nearly an hour or two... The doctors sent you up here and you fell asleep. Manager hyung tried to drag the four of us away but I resisted and JunSu helped me convince him to let me stay.” Jae said, his stomach twisting at the story. YunHo just nodded,
“What about him?” he asked, gesturing to behind Jae. The blond turned around, seeing ChangMin sleeping on a chair at the foot of YunHo's bed, his head resting on the hard mattress just as Jae's had been minutes before. Jae frowned, how had he not noticed the maknae before?
“I guess he came back after I fell asleep...” he said, eyes resting gently on the maknae, who's tired face looked peaceful in sleep. “He'd do anything for you, you know.”
“Yes... And maybe one day that is what will destroy him.” YunHo's eyes seemed distant as he watched the boy sleep. Jae frowned, turning back, but before he could speak, there was a knock on the door. YunHo sat up, letting go of Jae's hands just as the blond moved from the bed onto the seat,
“Come in!” YunHo called, frowning. The door opened and YunHo's mother stepped inside, her face aged with worry. She was followed by JiHye, who practically sprinted across the room and leapt at her brother,
“Oppa! Are you okay?” she cried, throwing her arms around him. YunHo smiled, hugging the girl back,
“I'm fine, JiHye-yah.” he chuckled, making eye contact with his mother and bowing his head.
“Oh YunHo-yah!” she said, striding across the room and sitting beside him. “I cannot... I can't... Why would someone..?” she asked, tears filling her eyes.
“I don't know, mum, but I'm okay. I promise I'm okay.” he smiled, reaching out to embrace her along with his little sister.
“How long will you be in here?” she asked, looking around and smiling at Jae.
“I'm not sure. A few days?” he said, rubbing JiHye's back as she clung to him.
“A few days?!” the girl cried, her eyes wide.
“Your brother is very unwell, JiHye-yah. He needs to get better here.” the elder woman said, stroking her daughter's hair. “YunHo-yah... Can I speak with you?” she asked, glancing briefly at her daughter, and then towards the blond and the sleeping maknae.
“Of course...” YunHo frowned, shifting slightly.
“JiHye-yah, how about we go get you something to eat? It's been a long car trip!” Jae smiled, nodding at YunHo and reaching a hand out to the girl. JiHye glanced at YunHo and her mother before taking Jae's hand, letting him help her off the bed and towards the door.
Thank you, YunHo mouthed before turning back to his mother, Jae nodding his head and closing the door behind them.
“What about...” YunHo's mother glanced at ChangMin, but the leader just shook his head.
“He still has a few hours of sleep left in him. He's worked so hard recently, he needs his rest.” YunHo smiled, eyeing the maknae affectionately before pausing, one question burning in his throat. “Dad's not coming?” he asked, a frown on his lips.
“No.” his mother replied simply, her hand reaching out to hold on to his. YunHo just nodded, shrugging it off and pushing a smile onto his lips.
“Mum it's been so long since I-”
“Are you and JaeJoong together?” she cut him off, her eyes still resting on YunHo's hand clasped in her own. YunHo's smile fell and he stared at her. The silence seemed to stretch on for hours until YunHo nodded his head,
“Yes.” He could lie to his friends, to his fans, but he couldn't lie to his own mother. “Yes we are.”
“Okay.” she didn't yell or scream or freak out. She just nodded her head once, hand still holding YunHo's. “Do you love him?”
“Yes.” YunHo answered without skipping a beat. “More than I even knew I could.” She smiled, head rising up and looking into his eyes,
“Then I approve.” her words were simple, but they were almost like music to the leader's ears. Approval. He had just gained his mother's approval.
“Mum...” YunHo said, his heart in his throat,
“Your father will never approve... He'll never accept you. But you are my son, and I love you no matter who is in your heart. JaeJoong is a lot of things... But he loves you, and I know that I can trust him when it comes to you, and now that I know you love him, I understand that he is who you need. Your father would never understand that, and that is precisely the reason he will never find out.” The woman looked at him, her voice strong and commanding.
“You mean... I shouldn't tell dad?” YunHo raised his eyebrows,
“Never tell him.” she repeated, her hand moving to cup her son's cheek. “I love you too much to let him hurt you more. I am so, so sorry for not stopping him in the past years.” It was then that they heard yelling in the halls. YunHo sat up straighter, staring at the door, his lips curling up at the familiar voices,
“No I will not calm down!” a man yelled,
“Hyung please, everyone can hear you!” another reasoned,
“Hyung, it won't be good for YunHo if you're screaming like that,” another tried,
“YunHo nearly fucking died! You cannot tell me to calm down!” the first yelled again, causing the man in the hospital bed to chuckle. YunHo's mother pursed her lips at the foul language, but kept her thoughts to herself as the door flew open, hitting the wall with a loud bang that caused ChangMin to leap from his seat, eyes still half lidded with sleep, face filled with shock and confusion.
“Fucking hell, YunHo!” HeeChul cried, practically running towards the bed, followed closely by RyeoWook, SungMin and a boy YunHo had never met before, he looked around the same age as ChangMin. Jae entered the room a brief moment later, JiHye holding onto his arm as she stared at HeeChul,
“HeeChul-hyung don't swear in front of my mother and baby sister!” YunHo said, but the grin on his face wasn't able to be hidden.
“Jesus Christ, YunHo, I heard it was an anti fan... When they find the bitch, I will personally throw her in a cell and beat the shit out of her.” HeeChul declared,
“Hyung!” RyeoWook said, giving the eldest a very disapproving look as YunHo's mother raised her eyebrow and climbed off the bed, moving to stand with her daughter.
“No you won't, because I'm not pressing charges.” YunHo claimed. The room fell silent as everyone stared at the man in the hospital bed,
“You're not serious.” ChangMin said, eyes wide as he stared at his hyung. “Hyung, she tried to kill you.”
“I know.” YunHo said, looking around at all of them. “but she didn't know what she was doing.”
“YunHo are you insane?” HeeChul cried, his eyes wide. “She tried to murd-”
“I know, HeeChul.” YunHo cut him off, his eyes were filled with a determination Jae knew very well. The look in YunHo's eyes said that his mind wouldn't be changed.
“YunHo-yah...” YunHo's mother tried but he just shook his head,
“No. I will not cause drama for my members by bringing a lawsuit into this, and I will not destroy a family. Whoever it was, boy, girl, man, woman, they are surrounded by people who love them and care for them, and I will not destroy that. I won't ruin a life for my selfishness.” he said, looking between the people in the room,
“Ruin a life? She could have ended your life, and still you're worried about being selfish?” HeeChul asked, incredulously.
“She has her entire life ahead of her, Hyung. She will have a family, and a job and memories and everything else. I will not doom her to a life in a cell.” YunHo replied.
“Did they ever catch her?” MinJong asked, his brow furrowed. Jae nodded, hesitantly.
“She turned herself in later that day. But, as he said, YunHo didn't press charges. He let her go free...” Jae sighed, shaking his head.
“Was she appreciative? Did she fall to his feet and beg for forgiveness?” Jae could hear the anger in MinJong's voice.
“No. She didn't even thank him.” Jae chuckled, “HeeChul wasn't very appreciative of his kindness either. I remember a very strongly opinionated blog post, lots of swearing and he even confessed that he had prayed.”
“I think I heard about that...” MinJong smiled slightly. “How long was he in the hospital?”
“It took him a few more days until the doctors deemed him fit to return home, and even when we got home he needed someone there to take care of him...”
“JaeJoong-ah!” YunHo yelled playfully from his spot on the couch, a mug of boiling hot tea in his hands.
“What!” Jae yelled back from the kitchen. He was stirring food on the stove, concentrating on not burning himself while his whiny boyfriend yelled at him from the other room.
“My tea is too hot!” YunHo yelled back, his amusement evident in his voice.
“Then wait for it to cool down, idiot!” Jae laughed, throwing a handful of dried seaweed into the pot of boiling soup.
“No! I need you to come and cool it down for me! Come and blow on it!” YunHo whined, causing Jae to roll his eyes,
“Grow up, YunHo!” he grinned, standing in the doorway of the kitchen and watching YunHo perched on the couch, a steaming mug in his hands as he was cocooned in the down rug.
“But Jae! I'm sick! You have to take care of me!” the leader pouted childishly. Jae rolled his eyes,
“If I knew that this was what it would be like, I would have made ChangMin-ah stay home with you.” Jae said, crossing the room and blowing on the hot beverage in the leader's hands.
“Yes, but if ChangMin was the one taking care of me, then I wouldn't be able to do this.” YunHo kissed Jae's lips softly, smiling up at him.
“You could, but it would just be weird for everyone afterwards.” Jae smirked, heading back towards the kitchen to serve the soup into two bowls. “Now sit at the table like a human being to eat your food.” Jae gave him a pointed look as he picked up the bowls, putting them down open opposite sides of the table. YunHo nodded, getting to his feet and waddling across the room, large rug and all. “Lord, I think that if you're well enough to be giving me grief then you should be well enough to re-join the group.”
“I'll be well enough soon.” YunHo smiled, reaching out to take Jae's hand. “I'm sorry if I'm driving you crazy... I'm just going insane stuck in these same walls. I don't mean to bother you.”
“I know.” Jae chuckled, kissing the back of YunHo's hand and getting up from his seat to go back into the kitchen, filling a glass of water. “I don't want you to have another caughing fit.” he smiled. He paused in his step when his phone began to vibrate in his pocket. Jae brough the device up, frowning, it wasn't a number he recognised.
“Hello?” he asnwered, YunHo giving him a confused expression. The blond shrugged when no sound came from the other end, “Hello?” he asked again.
“Je... JeJun-ah?” came a woman's voice, softly through the line. Jae frowned deeply,
“Who is this?” he asked, an odd feeling pooling through his stomach.
“JeJun-ah...” there was a sound almost like a sob, “It's... It's your mother. Your biological mother.”
JaeJoong dropped the glass from his hands, not even noticing as it smashed against the floor.
