Read Hofstadters's Metamagical Themas. Part of the chapter on the cube (partial inverses) helped me solve it the first time without giving me a solution.

After that, I could not do it on my own again, and resorted to Cubik Math, by Singmaster. Since then, I've been shortening algorithms and using my own short cuts.

Certainly the first one. The second one will probably have to be ordered, though on rare occasions it can be found at B&N (after all, that's where I first discovered it).

My friend has this Rubik's Homer (or whatnot) that no one can solve. It's crazy.

The Rubik's Homer is diffult...technically it's merely the 8 corners of a regular 3x3x3 Rubik's cube, but without the center cube that all (2n-1)x(2n-1)x(2n-1) cubes have, you lose a frame of reference and it appears much harder than it actually is.

p.s.

I love Homer.
