I think it's 100% blacks - men and women. Surprisingly enough 4 out of 10 of them are from Louisiana: two go to Xavier, one goes to Dillard in New Orleans, and one girl is from BR, she goes to Southern! This is pretty unusual for a program where generally no two people are from the same state. Also weird that there are no Hispanics, no native americans, etc.
I'm a physics major. Granted, I've taken a nearly four year hiatus from school and hadn't even transferred from a two year, but that is my major, and I'm not far from my transfer requirements for UCSD.
I was the only African American in any of my classes. To answer your question, I would guess that they'd feel a sense of pride but more powerfully pressure to perform well.
I'm feeling much older now, and even though my plan is to go back to school as soon as I've completed my current project, I'm uncertain about everything.
I shouldn't let uncertainty stop me. But I probably will.
Yeah, I suppose it's the same as for women in physics. Being the only girl in some of my classes, I can definitely understand the pressure to outperform everyone just to prove (to yourself?) that you're not just there fulfilling some PC quota.
You seem like the sort of person who'll never be satisfied with what you can become in a single lifetime, so maybe uncertainty is just your lot in life :) But don't let age cast any shadows on your decision - there's a 40-yr old undergrad in my physics program who's kicking ALL of our asses.
