There's so much on my friend's page that there's nothing I can do about it.... Oy. Hopefully I'll get through all of it in the next few days and be caught up again. I can't imagine what this would be like if I had lots of friends like phaballa or if I even read all of the entries by all of my friends. Sheesh, I'm a loser ( Read more... )

Believe it or not, it's spelled both Mackinac or Mackinaw, but always pronounced Mackinaw.

Michiganders are special. ;)

We are indeed special. Let me break out some wonderful useless trivia:

Mackinac is the name of the island. There is also the Mackinac Bridge, which connects the Lower Penninsula and Upper Penninsula.

Mackinaw is the name of a city on the Lower Penninsula of Michigan. You generally take a ferry from Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island. Also, Mackinac Bridge has one of its termini (terminuses?) in Mackinaw City.

Here's an illustrative map.

Like ataralas pointed out, all of these different Mackinae are pronounced Mackinaw (rhymes with sack-in-awe).

Oh, and people from Michigan are official known as Michiganians. But I think it's about even split 50/50 between Michigander and Michiganian.

I look forward to the windjammer cruises because then I'll be sailing with a group of passengers that I can call Michiganders and Michigeese. Cuz it amuses me so. Oh, I am a dork.

Well, then we'll be transiting to Mackinac Island on June 8th or 9th. Which I'm very excited about. The Bay is really pretty-- the water is soo blue and clear.

You know what they say: What's good for the Michigoose is good for the Michigander.

Sorry, I had to go for it.

Mackinac Island is really great. There's no cars allowed on the island, and there's some really cool old buildings and stuff. There's even a high school, with a graduating class averaging around 8-10 people.

Even though my grandparents and one of my aunts live in Traverse City, I haven't been there in a while. And even when I'm there, I don't check out the bay very much. My grandma owns a cottage on a small lake nearby, so we sometimes go there to swim and hang out-the water is murkier, but much warmer than Lake Michigan. Northern Michigan is really pretty and nice, especially in non-winter times. Have a fabulous time!
