Short essay on prostitution and morality.

Whore
by Brandon Fisette

Oh, prostitution. No matter what I say on the topic, it will always and forever remain a taboo in mainstream popular and political culture. But, maybe I can change a few minds on this touchy subject. I will NOT write this essay in paragraph form. It is not meant to be nice to look at, it is meant to get a point across. I feel that prostitution should be legalized. Oh my god, he said it. To tell you the truth, I would never hire a prostitute, but I feel that prostitution can be a very professional business. There are a few reasons people would like to keep prostitution illegal. One of these reasons is because in many cases, prostitution is not consensual. I say that unconsensual prostitution should remain illegal. It is basically rape. What should happen is that people who wish to make prostitution their careers should register with the state and get a license to maintain their own personal business. People who are registered with the state as prostitutes should be required to receive STD testing twice a month, or else their license will be revoked. This will cut down on diseases spread through prostitution. Arresting someone for having sex and accepting money for it is ridiculous. If both people in the act of the intercourse are doing this consensually, i do not see how anything illegal is happening. Likewise, arresting someone for hiring a prostitute is ridiculous. They are paying for somebodies services, and there has never been anything wrong with that. Whats going to happen next? Are repairmen, plumbers, psychologists, DOCTORS, etc. going to be arrested for having people pay for their services? Just because their services don't involve sex does not change the fact that it is a legitimate business, as is prostitution. Another reason prostitution is being kept illegal is because of religious reasons. Ever heard of separation of church and state? I mean, come on, what other reason can you find really? You're going to say something about morals. Morals go along with religion. If morals are what decides whether an occupation is legal or not, then I think cigarette companies should be illegalized! Aren't they constantly hooking teenagers and creating things that decrease health? Isn't that immoral? If you believe everything should be based on moralistic values, then a whole messload of things should be illegalized. If prostitution is done in a respectful, consensual, professional, safe manner, then why should it be illegal? Is sex really that big of a vice? Now, please take into consideration that I have not specified male or female prostitutes before you jump down my throat by saying "prostitution is misogynistic and demeaning towards women." I am not glorifying prostitution. I am simply stating that I see no reason for this to be illegal. There is obviously a religious agenda behind this law, and I do not believe that religious agendas should exist behind the law.

Thank you

Ziggy
